This structure was a stacking of mastaba forms with a large mastaba at the base and decreasing in size as it extended vertically, like steps. The stepped pyramid, as they were called, contained an original mastaba towards the center of this raised structure. It also contained an underground burial chamber just like the original mastabas. These huge pyramids were built with massive quantities of limestone making them very sturdy structures being able to withstand strong weather conditions. The pyramid structures that followed were slightly different in their structure and composition. They no longer contained the original mastaba like that of the stepped pyramids. Instead, they enclosed ascending and descending corridors leading to and from the underground burial chamber. In 2001, the Human Rights Commission (2002) received 85% of complaints under the Sex Discrimination Act, 30 % of that were on the base of pregnancy discrimination. Increasing women part taking in the workforce has been considered by many, as an opportunity of women's liberation, as well as a sign of breaking down the barriers of inequality. However this mpression of liberation is limited. The assumption that women can have it all is slowing leaning to a yes but due to the current workplace and societal attitudes, women are limited to the opportunities offered unlike men. Women are restricted by the change in their workforce behaviour and the unsuccessful attempts to change the perspective of gender roles at home (Moyle, 2002). Equality cannot be reached while women are still limited, restricted and disadvantaged in the labour market just because they can bear children. In times of pregnancy, there are still various employers who believe that women are not efficient and do not work as productively, while pregnant. In a number of cases many pregnant women were either demoted or fired, and in some cases they were denied of training or further promotional opportunities (Moyle, 2002). For instance, â€Å"Both of the women positions were made redundant as they confirmed they were pregnant or returning from maternity leave, despite the fact that the model employer was advertising and recruiting for the same position† (The Sydney Morning herald, 2011). The perception of the functionalist theory connects to Durkheim’s ideas of ‘social facts’, it views society as a system of interrelated parts that works together in order to maintains stability and the survival of humanity (Krieken et al. 2006, pp. 3). The approach believes, gender differences contribute to preserving the social stability of society, that women and men should perform tasks that are expected for them (Giddens et al. 2009, p. 306). Because of this people are categorize into groups based on gender, race, education or class. The affects of taking on a particular status in society requires both positive and negative behaviours. Each group is accompanied by a number of norms which define how people are perceived and expected to act (Krieken et al. 2006, pp. 3). In organizational behaviour theory, perception is defined as the way in which people perceive, view, and understand others and the surroundings around them (Patil, S, 2008, pp. 3). Perception severely impacts on the attitudes employees have of others and themselves, as well as the decisions they make within an organization (Patil, S, 2008, pp. 3). An example of this is, according to The Sydney Morning herald (2011) an employee of Virgin Blue suggested that â€Å"All females should be on contracts so that when they get pregnant it is easy for the company to get rid of them. † This perception reinforces the message that women are not welcome in the workplace and they don’t belong, indicating that a woman only suitable place is at home. Women, who are able to have children, should view pregnancy as a privilege, being able to give birth, able to give life, rather than something they are penalised for and discriminated against. The greatest concern is the amount of women accepting this sort of discrimination. It has been reported that there is a trend over the past years of more women working and fewer women choosing to have a family or limiting the number of children they have, because of the conditions of the workforce (Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, 1999 pp. 1). It appears that they allow this sort of inequality because they believe discrimination is a part of life, that pregnancy is a personal choice. This clearly indicates that the perception of society and social impact, highly affects the way women view the subject. We cannot ignore the fact that workplace discrimination and harassment in relation to pregnancy still remains a true concern for many women in our society. Regardless of status, industry, or level of education, or in the characteristics of age, race or religion, for many women they will always be placed at a disadvantage because of the social facts and perceptions of society (Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, 1999, pp. 7). However, attitudes towards the ‘working women’ are gradually changing. The relationship between an employer and employee is one of mutual rights and obligation, as more and more employers are addressing and acknowledging the importance of the inequality issue, we step in to an economy of transition.

Awareness to the Health Problem of Violence Against Women

The American Nurses Association (ANA) supports education of nurses, health care providers and women in skills necessary for prevention of violence against women; assessment of women in health care institutions and community settings; and research on violence against women. ANA believes there is a need to increase awareness to the heath problem of violence against women, as well as reduce injuries and psychological misery associated with this crime. ANA believes health care professionals must be educated as to their role in the assessment, intervention, and prevention of physical violence against women. Further, ANA supports the YEAR 2000 Health Objectives, which cite the surveillance, prevention and intervention for violent behavior as a priority issue for the nation. Physical violence against women is behavior intended to inflict harm and includes, slapping, kicking, choking, punching, pushing, use of objects such as weapons, forced sexual activity and injury or death from a weapon. Physical violence is by definition, assault and it is a crime. Ninety-five percent of serious assaults by a spouse or intimate partner are men battering women. Abuse is the leading cause of injury to women and homicide a major cause of traumatic death to women. Physical violence against is pervasive and cuts across all ethnic, racial, religious, and socio-economic groups. Based on national survey results, 1. 8 million women are beaten by their husbands each year. Stated another way, one of every eight husbands assaults his wife at least once during a given year. Abuse during courtship and cohabiting relationships affects between 16 and 23 percent of all dating relationships. The FBI estimates that her male partner will physically assault one in two women during her lifetime. Frequently physical abuse begins during pregnancy with 25-30 percent of pregnant women reporting abuse prior to or during pregnancy. Pregnant women reporting abuse are more likely to deliver a low birth weight infant. Injuries to women sustained from abuse include contusions, concussions, lacerations, fractures and gun shot wounds. Emergency room records document that 22 to 35 percent of women presenting any complaint are there because of symptoms related to physical abuse. Some 1,000 women are killed each year by their male partner, almost always following years of physical abuse. The economic costs of interpersonal violence are high especially if a weapon is involved. The lifetime cost of firearm deaths and injuries are estimated at $23 billion in 1990 with more than 80 percent of the medical care costs borne by public funds. During the same year, injuries caused by interpersonal violence requiring hospitalization cost an estimated $80 billion. Because most physical violence between intimate partners goes underreported, the economic costs are grossly underrepresented. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Surgeon General and Centers for Disease Control have forwarded recommendations that all women be routinely screened for physical abuse and offered counseling, education, advocacy and appropriate referrals. Year 2000 Health Objectives cite the surveillance, prevention for violent behavior as a priority issue for the Nation.  · Routine education of all nurses and health care providers in the skills necessary to prevent violence against women Routine assessment and documentation for physical abuse of all women in any health care institution or community setting  · Targeted assessment of women at increased risk of abuse including pregnant women and women presenting in emergency rooms.  · Education of all women as to the cycle of violence, the potential for homicide, and community resources for primary, secondary and tertiary prevention and care.  · Education of school age children and adolescents in public schools about relationships without violence and community resources for help. Research on violence against women, including the development and evaluation of nursing models for preventive assessment, intervention, and treatment for abused women, their children and perpetrators of violence. Partner abuse victims tend to obscure their victimization. They are acutely aware that disclosure of their dilemma will be met with defiance or minimization by their partner, friends, and relatives and by increased abuse by their partners. When a woman becomes independent financially and emotionally the abuse increases the violence by their partner. Some end results are women killing the abusive partner, most of the time it is in self- defense after a history of beatings. Studies have been performed in reference to domestic violence and the abuse of drugs and alcohol. Some abusers are abstainers, however, more are substance abusers than not. The present view is that abusers use alcohol and drugs as an excuse for their violence and drink when are about to become violent. Apparently there seem to be a connection between alcohol and drugs and the severity of violence committed against women. In contrast, victims of domestic violence tend to blame the abuse on the substances used rather than on the abuser personally. The victim acknowledges that they do not enjoy the abuse, but believe their partners philosophy that they deserve the abuse. Victims of domestic violence stay with their abusive partner due to economic status, fear of physical danger to themselves and their children, fear of losing children, lack of job skills, lack of alternative housing, lack of support from family members and friends, lack of information regarding alternatives, fear of court procedures, and fear of partner retaliation. The majority of women have poor self image, are lonely, embarrassed and tend to protect the abuser, they are insecure about themselves and believe their partner is sick and needs their help.  · Backache, abdominal pain, indigestion, headaches, hyperventilation, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, anorexia, heart palpitations, injuries without explanations and embarrassment about them, hidden injuries to head and neck, internal injuries, genital injuries, scars, burn, joint pain or dislocation, numbness, hearing problems, or bald spots. Injuries from a belt, iron, raised ring, teeth, fingertips, cigarette, gun, or knife, jumpiness or flinching in the presence of the abuser, substance abuse/suicidal thoughts or attempts, denial of any problems in their relationship, lack of relationships of friends or family, isolation or confinement to home. Believing in family unity at all costs and in traditional stereotypes, an overzealous partner who does not want to leave spouse alone in an emergency care unit. Battered woman syndrome is being suggested as a sub classification of PTSD due to repetitive abuse being a serious threat to the victim†s health and life. Battered women report nightmares, flashbacks, recurrent fears of more violence, emotional detachment, numbness, startle response, sleep problems, impaired concentration, and hyper vigilance. Victims show reactions to chronic trauma, but no symptoms of psychopathology are present. How can we help? We can offer information and assistance to these individuals who are victimized by their partners. Recognizing the symptoms (listed above) is the first step in offering assistance. Make an assessment (length/frequency of abuse, types of abuse; physical, psychological, sexual, financial) and recommend the victim to available services offered in the surrounding area. Do not be judgmental, be objective, and non threatening, ask directly if abuse is occurring, identify the abusers behavior, acknowledge the seriousness of the abuse, help the victim to asses internal strengths, encourage use of personal resources, give the victims a list of shelters, police departments, legal assistance, and financial aid, allow the victim to choose his or her own options, teach victim to develop a safety/escape plan, tell the abuser to stop the abuse and get himself help, do not blame the victim, do not get angry with the victim, refuse no help to the victim even though they are not ready to leave the abuser, do not retaliate with the victim against the abuser, do not encourage the victim to leave the abuser before she is ready. It is however, important to assure the victims they are not alone and they do not deserve the abuse they have become accustomed to. We must impart to them that they have dignity and worth and acknowledge their mental and physical exhaustion, fears, ambivalence about the abusers and leaving, and their wish to help the abuser as well as themselves. The victim may want to try counseling with a community agency or a local pastor, do not discourage this, it is always the victims decision on how to go about, stopping the violence in their own life.

A large evidence based study carried out to determine the viewpoint of various health professionals and nurses or caregivers and patients regarding self care of HF patients (Vazler, 2015). The article mainly focuses on examining experiences, behaviours and viewpoint of health professionals and patients and obtains various data on self-care to provide support to HF patients. The measure of central tendency I aim to study in this article is mean. Mean as previously mentioned is the most common used measure of central tendency. Divided into several types weighted mean, arithmetic means, harmonic mean (HM) and geometric mean (GM). The reason for choosing mean in our study was that it provides a good representation of data as it uses every value in the data. Mean has the best ability to resist fluctuations between various samples for example we observe that samples drawn repeatedly from the same population gives similar means and thereby confirming mean ability to resist fluctuations. Other advantages of using mean is that it is a fast and easy way to calculate and available computer applications can be used to calculate it, no additional program is required. The calculation is easy and simple and does not require skilled statisticians to calculate it (Holst et al. 2000). Mean also has a number of limitations. To calculate mean our given set out data should be numerical. Mean cannot be used for nominal data, for example, data on race, gender and appearances like the eye colour cannot be evaluated by mean. Outliers that are numbers that is much higher or much lower than the rest of the data set makes mean calculation sensitive. The assumptions for measures of Central Tendency are not applicable for all types of variable (Li Shun, 2015). There are three types of variable, such as, nominal, ordinal, interval or ratio variables. Nominal variable For the nominal variables, Mode is the most appropriate measure for central tendency. Median is not applicable in the case of nominal variables because there is no order in the nominal variable. Mean is not applied in the case of nominal variable, as nominal variable does not include any real numbers (DR. Anilkumar, 2013). The mean always needs mathematical accountings based on some numerical measures, i.e. real numbers which can be operated mathematically. Ordinal variables In the case of ordinal variables, Median and Mode are applicable. Mean may not be applicable. Ordinal numbers are not real numbers. So mathematical operations cannot be done in the case of ordinal numbers (Li Shun, 2015). So mean is not applicable in the case of ordinal numbers. Ordinal numbers can give mode as the maximum frequency can be seen in the ordinal variable. Interval / ratio variables In the case of interval / ratio variable, the three measures of central tendency, are median, mean, and mode are applicable. However, if there are boundaries in the data, measurement of mean is indistinct. Therefore, if there are boundaries in the data measurement of mean is a meager choice and median or the mode should be used (Murray et al. 2014). Among 1421 papers identified, 37 met the condition for addition in this evaluation of patients self-care requirements. Incorporated studies concerned 1343 patients (565 male, 549 females 229 sex not accounted; mean age is 66.1 years and the range is 25-98 years), 63 healthcare providers and 75 caregivers. The greater part of studies were accomplished in USA (n = 24). In general, study feature was reasonable (n = 19) with ordinary study weak points being outward themes, over-reliance on expediency sampling and inadequate explanation of sample distinctiveness. Quantitative as well as qualitative research performed to obtain data regarding self-care from perspectives of healthcare givers and patients. We studied aspects of disease management by qualitative meta-synthesis approach (Murray et al. 2014). We used 11 databases for comprehensive, systematic and detailed research. We used research papers published from 1995 to 2012 in the study, which included about 37 studies from Ovid EMBASE, Ovid AARP Ageline, CSA Sociological Abstracts Ovid MEDLINE, EBSCO Academic Search Complete, EBSCO Soc INDEX, EBSCO CINAHL, Scopus and Proquest Dissertations and Theses, Ovid Psyc INFO ISI Web of Science (Lee Priebe,2012). We studied 63 health care professionals, 75 caregivers and 1343 patients HF self-care cases. Only those studies were included in the study, which provided primary data containing population specific data partly or wholly of mixed methods designs on samples above the age of 18. We excluded the papers published before 1995 and those not pub lished in English. We used a quality appraisal strategy and based on ten questions research was performed. These questions validated by CASP (Critical Appraisal Skills Programme) to maintain the high quality of research. We calculated the mean age of patients to be 66.1 years, and the range of age was 25-98 years (DR. Anilkumar, 2013). We obtained most of the study cases about 24 in USA. We performed a moderate level of study about 19 cases and main weaknesses in studies were found in over-reliance on convenience sampling, superficial themes and insufficient description of sample characteristics. For all the cases, we examined data, which did not support higher-order or lower-order themes and according to that, further analysis or redefinition of themes was performed. We enlisted the study on 37 papers in a table. Method of study used was face-to-face interview, structured, semi-structured interview and unstructured interview. We used theoretical, convenience and purposive mode of s ampling strategy. For each paper number of patients, health professional and caregivers enlisted and mean age for each was calculated and mentioned. The measures of central tendency that has been evaluated in the given journal article is regarding the measurement of central tendency of mean. The article reflects improving support of the failure of heart of the various patients in a given segment of a country. The organization needs to implement several tools and techniques to measure the improvements of the patients to maximize supporting options to nullify heart failure. The analysis of data is done through the help of quantitative data analysis with a sample size of 1343 patients and 63 health care professionals. The approach, which is selected here, is described design of research analysis (Li Shun, 2015). The evaluation of data reflects that form of self-efficacy assists the health care patients to enable themselves to minimize the effect of heart attack. In addition to this, t he measurement of central tendency has helped the researcher of the given journal article to attain the respective research hypothesis. However, the level of central tendency interprets that there are several limitations in the process of measurement of mean. The scope and quality of the data cannot be measured through the analysis of mean. In addition to this, there are no open-ended questions in the given research article. This does not emphasize the effect of analysis of the respective data analysis. This measure of central tendency was appropriate as it provided a single value for a large set of values. From the research, we could convey the experience of HF patients symptoms, which is mostly ambiguous due to the limited knowledge of HF patients about self-care. From the interview sessions, we were enlightened with their personal experiences, needed to improve self-care strategies. The results of this research indicate that even after recalling self-care advice from health professionals by patients they were unable to use and integrate this knowledge into their daily life. Clinical indicators in the study were ignored and rather the patients feelings and attempts to manage HF was evaluated. Results from the study indicate that patients and caregivers used their experiences for self-care (Murray et al. 2014). The quality and scope of the included study constrained the findings of this meta-synthesis. A major drawback, which had an impact on the depth of our analysis, was that our studies related to superficial themes. The data represented was inappropriate as in this study older patients were under-represented; theory was under-utilized for understanding the influence of age and social determinants and lack of age based analysis and the link between patients and self-care failed to address. Problematic areas included lack of HF knowledge and self-care. Conclusion From the patients reported accounts, scientific statements and professional recommendations on HF self-care lacked evidence based approaches. Inspite of the large-scale research carried out the relation between patients knowledge and self-care remains unclear. Inspite of all the drawbacks, some strength were also analysed in the study. This study provides approaches persuasive and new and provides empirical evidence for non-pharmacological management of HF patients. By the use of experience, feedback and coaching HF self-care is learnable and can be optimized with time. For better study of HF self-care, we can use algorithms or decision aids with caregivers and patients when available to help them in important decision making in self-care. From the studies, it was found that sophisticated knowledge of HF and misconception of knowledge does not facilitate better self-care. Research evidence shows that for an effective HF self-care in future, interventions should be conducted on the context of patients and should not be considered as a completely knowledge based issue.
